MEET our needs?

After the last week's lessons and reading through some of the wikis of my fellow classmates, I feel that it is essential that we really have a firm understanding of the various approaches before we embark on making use of them. With the concept of MEET in mind, as the prof has put forward in the latter part of the lesson, a poor fit may result in the lesson being just something fun, intersting but ultimately non-value-adding.

Even while coming up with our own lesson plan, it was difficult to actually find something which actually "fits" the concept that we were trying to present. Of course, this being an excercise has allowed me to understand the importance of prescribing the right medicine. The concepts which can help to improve understanding can also become a stumbling block to learners - a double edged sword.

As of now, I'm still trying to stomach the different approaches and concepts! Ugh! But everyone's putting in the effort to make this easier so hopefully it helps!

First Post, First Thoughts

Finally got this first entry done!!!! Phew... Lol.

K: What I already KNOW

I know that the government have been actively making use of technology to improve the quality of education in Singapore over the years. Being a product of the nineties, I have experienced some of the MP1 programmes I believed was put into action by the governement when my teachers made use of their "technological expertise" to teach some topics. There was less talk from the teachers in some lessons, of which videos and computer presentations were used to present certain concepts.


W: What I WANT TO LEARN

I would want to learn how to incorporate IT into teaching subjects which would actually have been deemed "not possible" to teach using IT. Namely, Physical Education. We all know that PE usually involves going outdoors to teach a sport or to play a game. It would be interesting if something could be developed to teach children/youths about Physical Education through technological means. This could come in the area of passing on general knowledge about sports or quizzes on how much a student understand about sports. Indoor activities such as virtual golf or trap shooting can make a lesson more interesting and it would also be useful as a wet weather programme for rainy days.

L: What I LEARNED this week

I have learnt that it is difficult to walk to talk sometimes and while some ideas are marvellous and great, it is difficult to actually accomplish. However, through speaking with my friends and some tutors, I also understood that "If someone says that something is possible, they are usualy right, but if someone says that something is impossible, they are usually wrong!!!"


Q: What QUESTIONS I still have

If everyone attempts to teach something in their own ways, won't there be a difference in the quality of students produced.

Should there be some sort of a guideline to follow, or is there already one.

What would be a good benchmark of a well planned lesson using IT?
